The Dimage model I have is a bit earlier than this one, but I thought you'd like to know about Minolta's driver update practices. For my Dimage scanner, Minolta chooses not to update the driver from XP to Vista, effectively tuning my scanner into an $800 brick. Thanks for nothin fellas.

Combining impressive hardware technology with versatile software applications, the Minolta Dimâge Scan Multi II film scanner is indispensable for both imaging professionals and avid amateurs. Its software driver offers nearly 600 automatic settings in nine categories with additional customization easily possible. Working with a variety of Macintosh operating systems, it functions equally well on Windows 98, 98, and NT 4.0, connecting through a simple USB port.
Standard usage permits up to six sleeved or four mounted slides. Optional accessories include the AD-100 adapter and the SC-100 slide feeder, both of which improve productivity by allowing you to scan up to 50 images in one batch. An additional timesaver is Multi Sample Scanning, which quickly reduces the random noise present with scanned images. Using RGB sensors that scan images line by line, the finished images have a maximum resolution up to 2,820 dpi, ensuring finely grained results in print sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. Taking the extra time to use features like Digital ROC (Reconstruction of Color) and GEM (Grain Equalization Management) virtually guarantees perfect clarity in all your photos.
With all these advanced functions, the scanner remains relatively easy to use with a simple window- and tab-based interface that allows you to control everything from color balance to histogram compensation. --Jill Lightner

Canon BJC-80 Portable Printer Review

Canon BJC-80 Portable Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have nothing but good things to say about the BJC-80. I've had it for two years, use it almost daily (mostly for color graphics printing) and it's still going strong. It travels well and is very convenient to use. Black and white print quality is excellent and color print quality is out of this world. I have the battery pack and use infrared with my Thinkpad notebook (something about wireless printing that can really impress a client!). I also use the scanning adapter - works fine on the road, but I prefer a flatbed scanner for most jobs.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Canon BJC-80 Portable Printer

For exceptionally portable printing options, the Canon BJC-80 offers all you could ask for wrapped in one very sleek package. Advanced printing technologies smooth black edges and separate colors for supreme legibility and exquisitely clear images; print speeds of 4 ppm black and 2 ppm color are on the slow side, but the final results are worth the wait. A 760 x 300 dpi supplies dense, true coloration on envelopes, high-gloss film, photo paper, plain paper or transparencies, on any size sheet up to 8.5 by 14 inches.
Weighing just over three pounds, the black case snaps shut and can be tucked right in your laptop's carrying case. Additional optional accessories like the portable power pack or scanner kit will expand the BJC-80's capabilities to that of your home printer, while the included 30-sheet input tray allows you to keep media organized even while on the go. Canon includes a one-year warranty covering parts and service.

Visioneer OneTouch 8600 Flatbed Scanner Review

Visioneer OneTouch 8600 Flatbed Scanner
Average Reviews:

The Visioneer 8600 proved difficult to install. I had The Visioneer 5300 and liked it very much but after installing the 8600 I wished I had tried the Epson 1200. First the system crashed and I rebooted everything seemed fine until I installed the MGI Photo Suite. It cause my program Second chance to crash and refuse to enter after rebooting. After I took of MGI Photo Suite it worked just fine. I am now downloading updates for both the 8600 driver and MGI Photo suite. I hope it corrects the problem. After scanning my first image I didn't notice any difference in scan quality over my 5300 Visioneer. However the 8600 was much faster probably 3 times as fast. Now if I can just get the rest of the software to work I can tell you how it all runs as a unit.

HP ScanJet 3570c Scanner Review

HP ScanJet 3570c Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So far, this is a great scanner. It has easy to use software, and it is really fast and quiet. The built in slide scanner works great - the easiest scanner I have had to scan slides. However - there are bugs in the software that keep the buttons from working. I have Windows XP, and it recognizes when the buttons are pressed, but the software does nothing. I called HP support and they said that it is a known problem and there will be a fix. When that fix comes out and the buttons work, I will give this 5 stars...

Lexmark #20 Color Ink Cartridge (15M0120) Review

Lexmark #20 Color Ink Cartridge (15M0120)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned a Z43 purchased back in 2001 knowing that replacement ink cartridges would be pricey (personal laser jets were not affordable even when my tech heavy portfolio was doing well). However, I was willing to make that tradeoff since the printer was highly rated and reasonably priced. My color printing requirements are relatively modest, about 1-2 pages/week. Here is a review of this product with a historical perspective. 2001 cartridges: Excellent 2002 cartridges: Good 2003 cartridges: Fair 2004 cartridges: Extremely poor Over the years, the quality of the cartridges has deteriorated significantly along with the quality of the retail packaging. I've always bought from reputable retailers, including Amazon, but who knows whether these retailers were buying authentic cartridges or unknowingly moving counterfeits that were slipped into the wholesale channels? My most recent and FINAL purchase of the 15M0120 color cartridge was from Target last month (July 04). I print in color about once a week, and the cartridge was dead in one month. Good thing that I bought it on sale for only $25, since those four color prints cost me ONLY $6.25 each... I attempted to exchange it but even Target with its GENEROUS return/exchange policy politely told me to call their corporate 800-number. The Target voice response system then referred me to a Lexmark 800 number. After being placed on hold for tech support even though I wanted to make a warranty claim, I finally gave up. For kicks, I checked Lexmark's website only to find out that problems with printing supplies are supposed to be handled with the retailer. THUS, NEITHER THE RETAILER NOR MANUFACTURER WILL STAND BEHIND THIS PRODUCT. It's not worth my time to pursue this matter any further, but I figure that a review of the product is my way of saying GOODBYE.Addendum: I printed out a copy of the warranty from Lexmark's website and brought the dead cartridge back to Target since it clearly stated that printing supply problems are handled by the retailer. The manager at Target approved an exchanged.

I ordered this because it was cheap. Stuck it in my Dell Photo Printer 720 and a couple of pages later, the ink started wearing off to the point that you had to print "Best" quality in order to see words. That only lasted 3-4 pages though .. then there was just no more ink. - had to throw it away and buy from Dell.

HP PSC 1410 All-in-One Printer (Q7290A#ABA) Review

HP PSC 1410 All-in-One Printer (Q7290A#ABA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For eighty bucks, this little 1410 is a deal. Print speed and quality are both good very for the price, and the scanner is surprisingly good. The unit is compact enough to fit on a shelf beside my desk, and it operates quietly, too.
Some here have complained about the 1410's ink cartridges being small and short-lived. To that I say anyone who prints in volume will find an inkjet printer isn't going to be the most economical choice. In my experience, I've found the 1410's ink to last a reasonable time, and the cartridges are less expensive than those required by two other printers I have.
Yes, the software does take forever to install, but it's very easy to do, and here's a tip. On the HP support website, a "basic" version of the software is available (drivers and controls, without the image editing and other fluff). It still isn't speedy to install, but is faster than the disk that comes with the printer. The downside of any multifunction machine from any manufacturer is that the software that comes with it tends to be quite bloated.
Pay more money, and you'll get more speed, better print quality, and lower printing cost-per-page maybe, but the 1410 has been just about perfect for my purposes, and didn't cost me much in the process. It has been reliable so far, I get good print and scan results with it, and I recommend it highly.

Lexmark made the wireless setup easy vis the enclosed computer CD installation program. I liked the automatic two sided printing too. Included in the box are extended life ink cartridges. Usually with a new printer you get limited yield cartridges.
I was able to scan pictures remotely via the wireless connection...very slick. I haven't tried the fax yet but the copy features work fine. The power is supplied via cord directly to the printer....no transformer to trip over. Print quality is good, typical ink jet. The box said the warranty is 5 years with registration. I had a Lexmark two printers ago and had trouble 3 times. Lexmark replaced the printer with a new on each time with shipping both ways at their expense.

Having installed 2 of these printers, I STRONGLY encourage you to go to the HP support site and download the latest printer software from www.hp.com/support. The CD's that came with the printers I installed simply didn't work on OS 10.3.9 and was not the latest software for OS 10.4 or 10.5. Using the CD's is frustratingly long and in the end, pointless. Unfortunately, you'll need broadband Internet because the software is over 180MB.
Also for those connecting the printer to the USB port of their Airport, I quote from the HP Support site:
"In general, HP printers that support networking and/or optional JetDirect print servers should print when connected to the USB port of a wireless router, such as the Apple Airport Express and Extreme Base Stations.
NOTE:Connecting to the USB port of a wireless router will provide a `print-only' function, meaning additional functions of your product, such as scanning or card slots, will not be available."
I was disappointed that my scanner didn't work when using the Airport hub. I still think the printer is a good value for the under $90 I paid on Amazon but the software that comes with it is frustrating difficult if you start with the CD's. I give HP zero stars for software installation, 3 stars for some of the software applications they give you and 5 stars for hardware and value; so 3 stars overall.

After switching to Vista, we couldn't get working drivers for our old printer and scanner. We first tried an HP all-in-one, but it had multiple paper jams from the get-go. So we tried the Canon. We've had this printer for about a month, and it's fantastic in all regards. SOFTWARE is simple to use, and doesn't take over your computer the way that HP software does. SCANNER is fast and easy. PRINTER puts out very good copies, and the "Light" setting is useful for basic printing while not using too much ink. The design is small and boxy (it reminds me of a 1950's refrigerator, but small), and doesn't take up much space. You can use it as a copier without the computer being on, which is quite handy.

I purchased this printer a year ago and have regretted it ever since. I got about 35 pages out of the first set of cartridges. I spent 2 hours on the phone with customer service running through a bunch of alignment, cartridge head cleaning, etc. procedures. Their final recommendation was that I print things on "fast draft" mode. The bottom line is that this thing goes through ink at an unbelievable rate. Even in fast draft mode I can only print about 50 pages. What a completely worthless printer. At $35 per set of replacement cartridges that's about 70 cents a page. If I could give it zero stars, I would.

We got these printers in our office with the new laptops....we have shared laser printers so our IT didn't want us using less economical ink jets, but I thought what the hey, I'll pay for my own ink to have it at my desk.
...BAD idea!!
I blew through the first set of cartridges in just three weeks...and maybe 100-150 pages! NOT PHOTOS, regular pages! (well, maybe THREE photos in the mix!)
I thought perhaps the cartridges that came with the machines were "samples"....ie, not full capcity, but it says right on the cartidge "standard yield"!!
So I fished another set of cartridges out of one of the other printer boxes...same thing!
The thing is, the PRINTER, aka "Hal", tells you when you are out of ink...Thank you Hal!Copy quality was just fine in both cases, but it wouldn't allow any further printing until I put new cartridges.
And get this...I can't just keep it to use the scanner!!! Without with out cartridges it deems as "ok", "Hal" won't even let me do THAT!
--PLEEEEASE Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
--I'm sorry, Kathy. I'm afraid I can't do that. ...It kills me to send this to the landfill...and shame on Dell for making it fit for nothing else!

HP Officejet J5780 All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier (Q8232A#ABA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the HP OfficeJet J5780 for a few days, and here are my initial impressions:
--Reasonable setup procedure, just a couple of awkward moments. Manual on CD, so it won't get used as much as it should, although the manual for the fax portion is included in print. Unfortunately, the included CD manual has only the most basic of info; additional info needs to be acessed at the HP website.
--Front control panel is very nice (see customer images). Lots of buttons, but well-organized and intuitive to use, especially with the LCD screen. Nice having an on-off button right there in plain view.
--Print quality seems good, but I've only done a couple of pages
--Scanning is excellent. I bought this all-in-one mainly for its' scanning abilities, and it is quite able. Can be used with HP software; I'm using it with PaperPort 9. Some learning curve for accessing all of the settings, but worthwhile.
--Fax features look nice, but not yet used. I'll update after I've used it.
--Auto document feeder (ADF) so far has been smooth and quiet. It extracts one page at a time, just as it is supposed to!
--NOISY! Definitely loses a star for the loud grinding noises that it occasionally makes (which I am sure my neighbors can even hear; I still jump when they start!), as well as other occasional various less startling noises.
--Ink: too early to evaluate... HP states that this new printers and others like it make more efficient use of ink. The printer "knows" that you are using HP branded products, so I'm not sure refilling or generics will be possible. Seem to be reasonably priced for an inkjet, but not widely available, not even Amazon sells it yet. The HP website sells the regular and "XL" high capacity cartridges with free shipping.
--Compact, fairly attractive, and does not feel too junky in its' construction, despite being all plastic.
Update: One week later, I still like this machine, despite finding some little quirks. I have not (yet) been able to get the HP software to retain my scanning preferences. The Vivera ink smears when I use a highlighter on a page that was printed on standard paper; I don't know how the inks would hold up on photo paper. Sometimes the power button doesn't turn off my printer; I will need to find out if my unit is just a little defective.
Hope this review helps!

Canon PIXMA MP510 All-in-One Photo Printer (1450B002) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My purchase from Amazon yielded a printer that had an issue. Canon promptly replaced with a brand new unit. The printer is plenty fast. Does a great job with text, nice and crisp, which is my primary concern whenever I purchase a printer. Printing on standard paper my photos look great. Looking forward to trying them on photo paper and I imagine the results will be even better. Copying, works great and copies look near identical to originals. Scanning function works great too with scans that can be used in print and elsewhere. At $150 this printer is the way to go. Of course you could spend twice as much and get something quicker but as too quality of output I am not sure the average user would see much of a difference without magnification. I have no qualms about recommending this product. One last note... it is great to have the separate ink carts. The black is twice as large as the 3 colored carts.
Thanks Canon

Brother MFC-440CN Photo Color All-in-One Printer with Networking Review

Brother MFC-440CN Photo Color All-in-One Printer with Networking

I have no complaints with this product. It amazes me a device with so many features for such a low cost can produce the quality of images of the Brother MFC-440cn. It replaced (and improved the quality and speed) of three devices, and freed lots of room at the workstation. There may be more expensive devices that can produce higher quality images, but I can't imagine the quality can improve much over what this can do. For 8x10 color images it is great. The scanning quality and speed is excellent for my needs. Throw in the fax and copy capability with a color LCD menu screen AND the ability to print directly from memory cards and you've got one fantastic and useful piece of equipment. I'll have to get used to the included software, but it has some nice features as well as some minor quirks. Once you scan an image, it is not intuitive what you are supposed to do next. A small problem overall. Changing cartridges is the most convenient and simple process I've experienced on an inkjet printer. I would buy this device again.

IRISCard Mini Card Scanner (Silver) Review

IRISCard Mini Card Scanner (Silver)

I felt the previous review was a little too harsh and does not do this product justice for it's most effective use: namely, business card scanning. I'm a mac computer consultant and I recently set this up for a client who gets a large volume of business cards. While it doesn't get all information from every single card, it's still a huge time saver relative to manually inputing this information. I'm impressed enough that I'm looking to get this for myself right away.
