Canon PIXMA MP760 All-in-One Photo Printer Review

Canon PIXMA MP760 All-in-One Photo Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, if you're in the market for a printer, you can't go wrong with a Canon. Canon printers consistently beat out the competition in independent tests for print quality. Their items are elegant, well designed, and most importantly, ink is affordable.
We all know the razor and blade scheme: sell the printer below cost and make it up with pricey cartridges. Canon, however, saves you a lot of money by including the print head with the printer and not on each cartridge. Because of this, genuine Canon cartridges can be had for around $12, while 3rd party cartridges, which many claim work just as well, can be found for as low as $2.
If you've already decided on a Canon multifunction, lets see which model is right for you. Canon's current market list is as follows:
MP130 - New model, and the most affordable yet.
Copy/Print/Scan
18ppm black, 13ppm color
2 ink tanks
No auto sheet feeder!
Card slots
MP390 - Has a fax, About half the cost of the MP7xx's.
Copy/Print/SCan/Fax
18ppm black, 12 ppm color
2 ink tanks
card slots
MP750 - Older model - exactly the same as mp780 but no fax.
Copy/Print/Scan
25ppm black, 17 ppm color
5 ink tanks
Built in Duplexing
MP760 - New Model - geared towards photo enthusiasts.
Copy/Print/Scan + Special Photo Features
25ppm black, 17 ppm color
5 ink tanks
No auto sheet feeder!
Built in Duplexing
*Unique photo features:
2.5 inch lcd screen
Built in film adapter for 35mm slides or negatives
can print directly from negatives
Card slots
MP780 - Does it all except for the mp760 photo features.
Copy/Print/Scan/Fax
25ppm black, 17 ppm color
5 ink tanks
Built in Duplexing
Now, let's look more closely at some key differences between these models:
*Fax: The first thing you should do is decide if you need a fax or not. If you do, you should choose between the MP780 or the MP390. If not, don't rule those two out just yet, they may have have other features you can't live without.
*Note: There is NO auto fax/telephone switching on these models if you wish to use the same line for faxes and voice calls.
*Number of ink tanks: The next important thing you should look at is whether you want to be able to replace each color individually or not. The MP750, MP760 and MP780 all have 5 individual ink tanks (photo black, black, cyan, yellow, magenta), while the MP130 and MP390 have only 2 (black and tricolor). The cost of each cartridge is about the same, but you will waste some leftover ink by throwing out the MP130 or MP390's color cartridge when just one color runs out.
*Photo printing: If you're planning on printing a lot of photos, you should probably go with an mp7xx. These have a superior print head, as well as the 5 separate ink tanks. The MP760 is especially noteable with all the features Canon has added specifically for photos. These come at a price however, as the MP760 does not share the auto sheet feeder of its MP750 and MP780 cousins, or the fax of the 780.
*However - If you plan on printing directly from memory cards, beware! The mp750 and mp780 do not have card slots! The 2 cheaper models and the mp760 do.
*Auto sheet feeder: The mp130 and mp760 do NOT have an auto sheet feeder. All 3 of the others do. An auto sheet feeder is very useful when doing a lot of scanning or faxing.
*Duplexing: The mp7xx models each have built in duplexing.
*Size: The mp7xx models weigh around 30 pounds and are quite big. The MP390 is a smaller, and weighs 18 pounds. The mp130 has a tiny footprint for a multifunction printer, and weighs 14 pounds.
Some features that all of Canon's current MFPs share:
*Copying: Each of these models has a copy function, and all have the same resolution (600x600 black, 1200x1200 color).
*USB 2.0 connection
*Pictbridge direct photo printing support
*All 5 models are great looking and will complement almost any decor.
My recommendations:
If you want a great price on an excellent printer and don't need a fax: MP130
If price is an issue but you still need a fax: MP390
If you can afford an MP700 series and don't need a fax, card slots, or the MP760's photo features: MP750
If you need its exclusive photo features (but no fax or auto sheet feeder): MP760
If you can afford an MP700 series and need a fax (but no card slots and none of the MP760s photo features): MP780

Brother MFC-9840CDW Color Laser Multifunction Center with Wireless Interface and Duplex Review

Brother MFC-9840CDW Color Laser Multifunction Center with Wireless Interface and Duplex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have waited many many years for the perfect all in one COLOR LASER....and this is it + more! I bought mine from a local store and have had it about a week. It comes in a huge box, but don't worry, this MFC is large but not too large compared to the other Brother mono laser all-in-ones (of which I have owned three over the years). The print quality is EXCELLENT and very fast for full color (21 pages per minute). My only initial concern was that it creased envelopes when printing on envelopes......but after consulting the manual there are fuser tension adjustment switches that solves that for perfect envelope printing (Settings, A, B and Envelope). I had compared many all-in-one color laser machines for many years (including recent ones from Xerox and HP). I was surprised that HP hadn't come out with a great, feature rich one yet. Brother beat HP to the punch and it is a knockout for sure. I am replacing a higher end Minolta color laser with flatbed scanner, a Brother MFC mono, and an HP mono workhorse with this ONE MFC-9840CDW!!! I am very very picky with print quality but this one is great! Bonus features are built-in duplex scanning, duplex printing, and wireless network capability! The replacement supply costs are also very reasonable and lower than most of the other color laser brands. Brother truly has a winner on its hand with the MFC-9840CDW!!! Thank you Brother....I LOVE IT!

HP Photosmart C4180 All in One Printer, Scanner, and Copier Review

HP Photosmart C4180 All in One Printer, Scanner, and Copier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an admitted HP loyalist. I did purchase an Epson to see what the fuss was about. Ended up donating it to Salvation Army less than a year. This C4180 replaced it. I like the fact that only two cartridges are needed. I never purchase the photo version toner. Plain color works just fine.
Puzzled by some of the negative reviews. I hooked mine up to a Mac G5 and also loaded the software. Print jobs look fine. Photos are terrific. Copies for routine household chores (report cards/articles)are very clear. But the real pleasure is the scanner.
I had a 3-yr old flatbed scanner (also HP) that just wasn't giving me the clarity I needed. My goal was to convert all those baby pictures to digital files. This tool really fits the bill.
I finally figured out that it's best to run the scanner from the computer, not the on-board console commands. It also helps to permanently add the HP Scan Pro software to the row of programs that appear along the bottom of the screen.
I've gone through about 600 photos. Although it can scan 4 photos at once(4x6), I found that placing 3 is better. Why? With more space between the photos, the scanner detects 3 distinct objects. That means you don't have to go in later to crop and "file-save as" a file with 4 different photos. What's even better is that each of the 3 photos gets saved with it's own file name. Say I call the first file as "Disney". The 2nd and 3rd file would get named "Disney 01" and "Disney 02".
There are some quirks in the software. When launching it, it tends to default to TIFF files which can take lots of memory. Be cognizant of this and remember to adjust your settings before your first scan of a session.
Overall I am thrilled with the output. And feel better knowing my favorite photos now have a high-quality digital back up. Don't know why it works so well for me but not others. Could be that I am on a MAC. Why not give it 5 stars? Because it's my way of sending a message to all printer manufacturers who insist on bleeding us dry with annoyingly small/over priced cartridges. Epson was worst, HP is a little better.

Acer AcerScan ScanWit 2720S Film Scanner Review

Acer AcerScan ScanWit 2720S Film Scanner
Average Reviews:

Contrary to the first reviewer, a passive terminator is not needed if this is the only SCSI device in the computer and you are using the bundled SCSI card. All I needed to do was plug in the SCSI card, hook up and scanner, install the driver, and boom, it's working! You do, however, need a terminator if you're hooking up the scanner to a third party SCSI card (ex. Adaptec). The scanner produces excellent scans for negatives, and very good results with slide films. Bundled software, Mirafoto, has ver nice features and is easy to use. However, for certain negative films it does not produce the most accurate colors, but that can easily be corrected in any imaging software (Photoshop 5 LE is included). For this price, this scanner is an excellent buy!

Canon Pixma MP530 Office All-In-One Inkjet Photo Printer Review

Canon Pixma MP530 Office All-In-One Inkjet Photo Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You should be aware that this printer has a serious "ink low" behavior. When any ink cartridge is getting low (which still means a lot of ink left by the way), it changes the Fax reception model. Instead of printing your faxes as they arrive, it dumps them into memory. So, even though yellow (say) is low, it will not print your B&W fax!
It takes more than 5 steps to print the fax and delete it (menu, scroll to memory item, ok, scroll to print, OK document, scroll to print all pages, ok, menu to go up, scroll to delete, ok to delete, ok to delete, menu to get out).
Worse, after a couple of these, the memory is mixed up. So, when you want to send a Fax, it will say "memory full" even though the memory is empty. You then have to power cycle the printer (hold down on/off for 1 second, wait 10 seconds, power on, wait for it to get ready (another 10-20 seconds).
This means you either have to waste ink by throwing out cartridges before they are empty, or you have to deal with this mess. Canon says there is no workaround or fix for this.
There are 3 other problems with copying you should know before you buy (I wish I did):
1. You cannot use the Auto Document Feeder (sheet feeder) when copying or scanning with any setting in auto (exposure, size, etc). It does not make any of that clear, so if you find it refuses the auto doc feeder, reset everything to manual :-(
2. Black duplex printing uses color cartridges for one of the sides, so uses the more expensive ink. That is, it does not use the blank ink for both sides.
3. Copying speeds are much slower than the blurb implies. If you make 10 copies of one page, it is as fast as they say. If you copy multiple pages, each one takes much much longer, does the scan, and then does the print. Also, if any setting is in auto mode, it does a two pass scan (one to check the page), and that takes a really long time.

Canon PGI-5 BK 2-Pack Pigment Black Ink Tanks 0628B009 Review

Canon PGI-5 BK 2-Pack Pigment Black Ink Tanks 0628B009
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The price per print of ink jet printers is simply expensive, especially when you consider the fact that the process is probably not even close to being archival quality. Yet for most they will suffice. It is commonly believed that if you want archival you should either use silver emmulsion (what you will get if you have your prints traditionally developed by a photo lab - even a one hour lab) or dye sublimation. All that being said, this ink and the printers they go into do a very good job. I've been very impressed. I don't think there is a huge difference over the last generation, but if you want the newer printers you have to make the switch to the newer ink. Good news is that it works with the current crop of paper.
What is great about this ink cartdridge is that in the canon printers it is the cartridge mostly used for black print, while the other black cartridge is used for photo prints. This keeps your cost of printing regular text a little cheaper.
Buying on Amazon isn't much cheaper than other options, but if you are signed up for Amazon Prime, it is increadibly easy to buy them and have them delievered very quickly (two days).

Epson Stylus NX515 WiFi Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer (C11CA48231) Review

Epson Stylus NX515 WiFi Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer (C11CA48231)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this all-in-one because my other printer is not a copy-capable printer and we need that capability. I did some research and finally decided on the Epson NX515 after reading several reviews. So far I have been very pleased with it. I have a couple of small gripes but nothing that cannot be overlooked.
The NX515 is actually a relatively small printer, taking up a little less space than any of my previous printers. It is also lightweight and easy to move should there be a need.
Setting up the NX515 is simple. There is a quick-start guide that explains the process of configuration and it makes the set-up almost foolproof. From the time I opened the box to the time I had a working printer that was producing output was less than 15 minutes, and there were no confusing or difficult steps in the process.
The only negative about the setup is that Epson, like almost every other printer vendor, does NOT include a USB cable in the box. The cost of a USB cable is actually only a couple of dollars (they're a high-profit item) so including one would not break the bank. If you do no have a spare USB cable available and you wish to direct-connect this printer, be sure to pick one up before trying to set up.
Once configured, the NX515 is a very capable printer. It has the fastest print speeds I have ever seen in an inkjet, printing faster in standard mode than I have seen most printers print in draft mode (for standard text - does not apply to photo printing). The quality does not suffer either and is excellent. I was pleased to see than this printer does not produce the banding I have seen in Epson printers' output in the past.
The control panel for setting up copying is very easy to read and very easy to navigate. It is very simple to change copy parameters and the instructions in the panel are straightforward.
I have not used the scanning capabilities of the NX515.
One feature I wish was available, even if it required buying an attachment, is automatic duplex printing. My other printer handles duplex printing with ease and requires no intervention at all. The NX515 does duplex printing but it requires manual intervention. This is a minor inconvenience, not a deal-breaker.
Epson has produced a very nice all-in-one in the NX515. The setup is simple and the print speeds are absolutely stunning. It is by no means a perfect device but it is an excellent product at an excellent price (approximately $110 at the moment). If you need a printer that can handle scanning and copying while producing beautiful prints, give this printer a close look.

Epson Stylus Color CX6000 All In One Printer, copier, scanner Review

Epson Stylus Color CX6000 All In One Printer, copier, scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What everyone else is saying about the ink cartridges is absolutely true. I have owned this printer for less than a month. I have printed probably about 10 - 15 color pages and 50-70 black pages on regular paper. The printer indicates that the black cartridge is empty! The black ink cartridge (T0691)costs ca. $17. This means the cost of printing (black) is about 30 cents/page! (It would be far cheaper to go to Kinko's...) I do not even want to think about how much color pages are costing--only after 10 -15 pages, all of my color ink cartridges are half empty. To make the matter worse, once the printer detects that one of the cartridges is empty, the printer does not function; Even though the last printed page looked perfectly normal and showed no signs of an empty cartridge. It simply becomes inoperative--until that supposedly-empty cartridge is replaced.
I had essentially the same problem with my previous Epson printer from the same series. I am also vaguely aware that there is a lawsuit either pending or ongoing against Epson on this issue: some of their printers, people say, are designed to give false readings on the amount of ink left (e.g. the printer gives "empty" signal even when the cartridge is not yet empty). This printer was given to me free of charge, but I am seriously considering not buying any new cartridges and buy a new printer by another manufacturer.

Canon CanoScan 3200F Scanner Review

Canon CanoScan 3200F Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this scanner primarily to be used to scan old photos and negatives, but also wanted the occassional document to be crisp and clear. I have been thrilled with my results so far. The photo correction (during the scan) does a wonderful job of clearing up the effects of aging although it did tend to add a bit of blue to the "true" colors of the photos. I have a separate photo enhancement software package that I use as I don't think the software included with the scanner is adequate for my purposes.
Documents scan well and I LOVE that you can save it as a text document! The scan speed is great too--even at 1200ppi!
A wonderful scanner and a bargain for the price!

Early Adopters Pick: October 2003. One of the fastest flatbed scanners available, the CanoScan 3200F delivers impressive 1,200 x 2,400 dpi scans in 48-bit color, and it corrects scratches and other aging effects.
A film adapter lets you scan negatives and transparencies. The scanner also boasts sleek lines and a gloss-finish lid with a textured surround to prevent finger marking. The CanoScan 3200F can scan an A4 page in just 17 seconds (at 600 dpi, using Windows XP with USB 2.0 and a Pentium 4, 1.7 GHz processor and 256 MB RAM), making it twice as fast as its predecessor, the CanoScan 3000F.
A super-fast USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection transfers image data from scanner to computer up to four times faster than standard USB connections, while an ASIC controller chip takes advantage of increased memory to process large data files in record time. The scanner engine is both faster and more powerful than those in previous models.
The scanner's Fast Multi-Photo mode creates separate de-skewed files from a single-pass scan of multiple photographs, while Canon's QARE Level 2 technology automatically removes dust and scratches from scans of reflective originals; it also corrects for color fading and graininess, saving you hours of manual retouching.
Four customizable "EZ" buttons can be individually configured to perform commonly used functions. These can include scanning straight to a PDF file, scanning directly to a printer (copying), and scanning automatically to a ready-to-go e-mail attachment. Since not everything can be scanned in single-sheet form, the 3200F's special Z-lid accommodates very thick items and applies equal pressure across the entire document, ensuring great quality when scanning from books, magazines, and manuals.
The CanoScan 3200F comes with a host of powerful applications: Ulead DVD Slide Theatre creates DVD playable slide shows and writes these to CD-R. It's ideal for converting photo or transparency sets into television viewable slide shows. ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5.5 is an image-editing program that handles color adjustment, labelling, and album storage and retrieval. OmniPage SE 2.0 is a powerful Optical Character Recognition application that allows scanned text to be converted into recognisable text characters/data.

HP Officejet Pro L7780 Color All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier (C8192A#ABA) Review

HP Officejet Pro L7780 Color All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier (C8192A#ABA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this all-in-one when my hp laser printer and all-in-one -- both of which had been running for at least 10 years -- died the same week. The 7780 seemed to offer all the features one could hope for in a single machine despite its cheesy build quality. I bought one at Staples which set up fine but then produced vertical streaks on print-outs. Thinking it was a bad machine, I exchanged it for another. That one wouldn't register commands on the front panel or do the preliminary setup. Another bad machine? Maybe. I then gave it a third chance and ordered one from Amazon which had dropped its price on the item by more than $100 in about a week. The one I received from Amazon wouldn't even start. I called hp tech service reps who first told me that the cartridges shipped with the machine are not good and that I would have to invest in a new set of cartridges (which I did) to see if the machine worked. When it didn't, I called them back and was told that there was nothing they could do except offer me another model. It's such a shame for a company like hp to lose it reputation over this and other machines which not only have the problems I encountered but others such as bad fax intakes, poor picture quality and internal programming that registers half-full ink tanks as empty so that one is forced to buy twice the amount of ink that he/she needs. It's the end of an era. This could have been a premier machine. Instead, it's junk. Don't buy it.

Hammacher Schlemmer Photograph Converter Review

I purchased this item on Woot instead of Amazon. I use Vista and Microsoft did not program Vista to recognize the drivers. I researched this problem on the internet and evidently I am not alone with this problem. No matter what I've tried - including downloading new drivers - Vista refuses to recognize it. My husband tried loading it on an older laptop that uses XP and, while it will recognize the drivers, the pictures are completely scrambled. It is going back. No wonder everyone is offering it so cheap! The old saying, "you get what you paid for" is sooo true.

HP PSC 1610 All-in-One Printer, Scanner, Copier Review

HP PSC 1610 All-in-One Printer, Scanner, Copier
Average Reviews:

As a Computer Technician at a major electronics outlet, let me say I've been called apon to tech support all the issues listed previously and more. HPs install software on this model is notoriously buggy, especially under Windows ME and 98SE. I have also gotten numerous calls confirming issues with the printer rejecting the inks a month or two after purchase. Sometimes purchasing new inks works, sometimes it does not, leading me to believe it is a problem with how this printer authenticates geniune HP ink.
All in all, the customers who have gotten this printer to work and continue to work are extremely happy with it, but large scale issues getting it that far make me hesitant to recommend it.

HP OfficeJet 7210 All-in-One Printer, Fax, Scanner, Copier Review

HP OfficeJet 7210 All-in-One Printer, Fax, Scanner, Copier
Average Reviews:

About 2/3 of the reviews I saw on amazon were very complimentary, but I was reluctant to purchase the hp 7210 after seeing some negative reviews about installation, software, etc. Luckily, I saw a pc world review which rated this product as the finest in this price range. They were right (at least for someone with a two year old DELL Dimension with Windows XP and all of the recent OS updates).
Amazing copy quality, great color copying and scanning, installation took about an hour and was easy (I don't fax much, so I don't feel qualified to comment on this part).
I highly recommend this all-in-one product for home and small office use.

VuPoint FS-C1-VP Film and Slide Digital Converter Review

VuPoint FS-C1-VP Film and Slide Digital Converter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although I'd been successfully using a Canon CanoScan LIDE 500f to scan OLD 35mm color and B&W negatives, it was slow going. Many of the negatives had curled up with the low humidity of Winter and mounting them into the 500f's slide adapter was quickly becoming a nightmare. I worked out how long it was taking me to mount and scan each negative, and took a look at my remaining workload (about 2,000 negatives and mounted 35mm slides remaining). It became clear I needed a faster solution both in terms of mounting and scanning speed.
Since the 500f's slide attachment only supports film strips, the new device had to support mounted slides. Also, the new device had to be simple to operate, allowing me to get negatives and film strips mounted as quickly as possible, while also having facilities to secure srips curled from low humidity. That's when I saw the VuPoint FS-C1-VP 35mm scanner. It was cheap, simple, and appeared to do everything I needed.
------THE UNIT
The VuPoint 35mm slide scanner is exactly what it appears to be, a 5 megapixel low-mid range CCD in a plastic housing. The housing contains a mini lightbox at the bottom to illuminate 35mm slides/negatives for scanning by the CCD. Simply take your slides or negatives, mount them in the included trays, and slide the trays into the scanner unit. Each tray window snaps gently into place, helping you to align slides/negatives under the CCD. The trays are VERY GOOD at holding curled negatives securely. (Extremely curled/rumpled negatives may introduce shadows into the scan. To relax the slides fully, try holding the tray over a steaming pot for about 10 seconds.)
The build quality of the VuPoint scanner is quite high. Although made of plastic, it has a very nice feel (akin to a 'satin finish' cell phone) and the mounted slide and filmstrip trays appear durable and fit firmly into the unit.
The unit gets power from an attached 4 foot long USB 2.0 cable, so it has an extremly small desktop footprint. The scanner is also insensitive to attitude, allowing usage virtually anywhere, from any angle (sideways on your lap, in bed, etc) making it much more likely you'll get that scanning job done.
------SCANNING
I installed the scanner drivers ONLY, ignoring the image editing software that came with the unit (Photoimpression 6) and instead chose to scan directly into PhotoShop CS3. Using this method I was only able to 'dumb scan' at the highest resolution of 2592x1680. For negatives, this means you will need to invert the image after scanning and then perform color correction/level adjustment/unsharp masking/etc. Mounted slides or film stips will scan positive but will still need additional filters applied for best results. If you're scanning into CS3, create ACTIONS to handle typical slide archetypes (negative, positive, blurry negative, desaturated positive, scratched and dusty slide, etc).
In practice, the scan driver shows you a low framerate preview of the image under the CCD. If you wait between 5 and 15 seconds, the light levels in the image will balance and be ready for scanning. A sequence of positives with extremely different light levels will push your waiting time towards the maximum. In extreme cases you can wait 45 seconds+ for decent balancing.
To initiate a scan you either press the 'copy' button on the unit, or click the 'snapshot' icon via the scanner software driver. Snapshots are quick, but once you have a snapshot you then need to 'transfer' the image to CS3. This can take as long as 30 seconds per image.
The driver holds 12 snapshots. Once this 'buffer' is full you need to transfer the snapshots to CS3.
The driver grabs a decent amount of CPU while its previewing - taking 60% CPU on a 1GHz Pentium M laptop, and 40% CPU on a 2GHz P4. I'd imagine CPU usage would be around 20% on a dual core (will test this out later).
------IMAGE QUALITY
This unit will win no awards for image quality. I scanned in three 35mm mounted slides and viewed them onscreen while simultaneously also using a backlit slide viewer. The raw scans were fairly grainy, with blown out highlights.
I am linking to the RAW scans (with light JPG compression) for your review. Try cleaning up these photos yourself to get an idea of what the scanner is capable of.

http://www.geocities.com/gamedev123/35mm_kodachrome_slide_aug81.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/gamedev123/35mm_kodachrome_slide_sep68.jpgI was subsequently able to clean the slides up in CS3 but couldn't recapture the lost details in the highlights. In some cases the loss of detail was so extreme that the photos were virtually worthless. High contrast photos seem to suffer the most (ex: a person in an unlit room sitting framed in a sunny window). However "normal" photos will occasionally suffer the same fate (a person sitting at a cafe with black shirt and creme colored striped pants = dramatic loss of detail in the pants).
The source photos provided were taken by my father and grandfather, using low-midrange SLR cameras - I have no idea of the lens or settings used. I assume these types of images represent typical inputs for this scanner. Higher quality slides with large, in-focus subjects should provide comparatively higher quality scans.
------OVERALL VALUE
As just a raw USB slide scanner, the VuPoint is arguably worth the US$99 purchase price.
The hardware is well designed and very user friendly, looking like something worth at least $99. However, the driver software is horribly amateur compared to the likes of Canon and HP and seems cobbled together AT BEST. It cripples the hardware side of things, turning a potentially quality product into a questionable purchase. Until the driver software is vastly improved, allowing you to switch off the 'auto' adjustment functionality and set your own parameters, there will be no way to scan high contrast imagery.[NOTE: The AMSHOW direct capture software that is installed along with the driver allows you to access some scan parameters. But I have been unable to make these changes persist or affect my scans into PhotoShop. I eventually installed the PhotoImpression software suite that came with the scanner, hoping it would provide me with a few more scanner control options. Sadly, this is just a consumer level app for rotating/sorting pics and applying canned image effect.]

HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One Printer Review

HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this printer driver installed twice.. first time on computer #1, driver on the CD took forever to load! For computer #2, I went to the HP site (per one reviewer's suggestion) and installed the smallest "for IT professionals only" version and found I could not use the scan function with that slimmed-down driver.
I finally figured out I had to load the full-feature English only 191MB driver, using the custom install option (left out the Photosmart, HP Purchasing). To disable the incessant looping Update nag message window on machine after reboot, I deleted the HP Update application (via Add/Remove utility) afterwards. I agree HP software is rather crappy and bloated but the HP printers have been more reliable than other brands I've used. I bought the 6500 to replace my 6 year old HP PSC 1210 that died after years of heavy use. Before that, I bought the HP Deskjet 500 that still works after 20 years. I hope this machine lasts awhile, as well.
I'm surprised this newer-model printer isn't faster than my old printer (equally noisy to my 1210) but the scanner is improved - more adjustment options, decent resolution. I wanted the flatbed copying and sheet feeder capabilities for my next multi-function machine and this one does the job adequately.
Had a power outage recently and was concerned that since I didn't power off via the button on the printer, it might screw up the settings.. but there was no issue. It worked fine after power was restored, without me having to make any adjustments.
Now, if I can only figure out how to avoid paying an arm and two legs for those ink refills! For most documents, I set the print resolution to "Fast Draft" to make the ink cartridge last longer.
Addendum (5/16/10): Ignore the "empty cartridge" alert on the machine. The final warning will stop the print jobs from proceeding. Just take that ink cartridge out and re-install it back into the machine. This will override the "out of ink" status. You'll get at least another 20 pages before the ink cartridge is actually empty.
Found out Walgreens cannot refill the ink cartridges for this HP model. I could try my luck with ink refill kits.

Canon BU-30 Bluetooth Adapter for PIXMA MX850 Review

Canon BU-30 Bluetooth Adapter for PIXMA MX850
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am very pleased with the bluetooth adapter BU-30 for my Canon MX850 All-in-One printer. It prints quickly and there doesn't seem to be any delay at all compared to having the printer plugged into my laptop. The only drawback, which is that of technology itself, is that you can only use the print function of the all-in-one. If you want to scan anything, it has to be plugged directly into the pc, which to me is fine since you have to be next to the scanner anyways to place the scanned item onto the scanner.
I originally purchased the bluetooth adapter because my office was my kitchen table while my two children, 4 years and 2 years old, ran the household. Whenever I needed to print anything I had to take my laptop to the printer to print, which was very inconvenient. I bought the adapter and now I can be anywhere in my house and print without any delay. I have since reclaimed my office space but still use the bluetooth adapter. It works well with my husbands laptop also and has defenitely made it easier to share workspace with him if he has to be on his pc too. Before the adapter, I would have to move my computer so that he could attach to the printer. Now, he can stay sitting at his own desk without bothering my work.
Two thumbs up for me!!
