SVP FS1000 Black DIGITAL FILM 35MM NEGATIVES & SLIDES SCANNER Review

SVP FS1000 Black DIGITAL FILM 35MM NEGATIVES and SLIDES SCANNER
Average Reviews:

The SVP Film/Slide Converter worked first time out of the box. It is easy to use and seems to provide excellent results using the automatic features. There are custom settings if necessary. It is fast in scanning - 1-2 seconds per slide. It takes longer to load the slide/film trays than it does to scan. Extra trays can be purchased separately and are helpful. I have been able to amuse the family with picture of years past. The converter is a lot of fun to use. When I tried to have old 3 negatives printed I was told it would cost "about $95.00". Now I can print many for a great deal less! Someone came up with a great idea and I'm glad I found it .The only adjustment to the product would be is to make a slider for 110 negatives.

HP 5500c Scanjet Scanner Review

HP 5500c Scanjet Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this primarily for the automatic photo feeder. It was great to be able to put in a stack of photos (I went up to 25 at a time) and walk away while it scanned. Had only one or two times when the feeder jammed; wished it would have allowed continuing after clearing the jam instead of stopping scanning on the batch completely. Quality is excellent but I'm returning it as it takes too much time to adjust the scans afterwards ("auto straighten" feature doesn't help--photos frequently feed crooked; part of scanner hardware ends up in the scans; frequently get 1/2" black band on left in scans). I might as well scan each manually so it will be done right the first time.

Rather than scanning photos one by one, the HP 5500c can automatically scan a whole stack of 3-by-5 or 4-by-6-inch photos. The automatic photo feeder scans multiple photos at the press of a button, the first scan taking only 7 seconds.
Featuring up to 2,400 dpi optical resolution and 48-bit color for printing, e-mailing and posting to the Web, the HP 5500 offers seven one-touch buttons for quick execution of common tasks, including scan, copy, e-mail, and share-to-Web. The scanner reproduces in both monochrome and color, and can make up to 99 copies at once with convenient front-panel controls.
The 5500c comes with lots of extras, including HP photo and imaging software, memories disc creator, copy utility, share-to-Web, and ArcSoft Funhouse for Windows. This model is USB 2.0 compatible and includes a USB cable. It is backed by a one-year warranty.

Nikon Super CoolScan 5000 ED Film Scanner Review

Nikon Super CoolScan 5000 ED Film Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, let me say I am a neophyte when it comes to scanning. My mother passed away recently and I wanted to go through my father's 20,000 slides and scan the best ones before they, as many before them, disappeared into the hands of one of my 7 other siblings never to be found again.
After culling my father's slides I ended up with about 1000 I wanted to scan. After culling my own slides I ended up with another 250 slides. Additionally, I had about 250 slides from my grandfather slides And after that I decided to go through my color negative collection and scan the best of those as well. A daunting project! But honestly well worth the effort.
Most of my father's slides are Kodachrome. Much has been written about the inability of this scanner to scan Kodachrome slides and said about ICE4 not working with Kodachrome. Well, I have some good news The ICE4 does work extremely well for the most part. However, with Kodachrome slides it does produce minor artifacts in about 5 percent of the slides.I scanned with ICE (not ICE4) always on and then rescanned if I encountered unacceptable artifacts. I did notice that the scanner ICE feature was more likely to be stumped by old Kodachrome slides where subjects were wearing shirts with stripes.
The GEM ROC and DEE (the other stalwarts of the ICE4 other than ICE itself) work on Kodachrome slides as well, but I found that the results were unpredictable and that I could achieve better results myself in Photoshop far more quickly. The GEM ROC and DEE features simply took too long and slowed down the scanning unacceptably. The results, for me, were not worth the additional scanning time. So I never used these features. But the "enhance" feature on the scanner I used nearly 100% of the time with great results - much better than the GEM ROC and DEE features.
The scanner is fast and does produce wonderful wonderful detailed scans, easily demonstrating the grain in the transparancies at 3000 and 4000 dpi. The Kodachrome slides were a challenge to the Dynamic Range of the scanner, but I believe that most of the detail in the shadows that is there was extracted. With dark slides I used the VERY useful gain feature turning it all the way up to 2 in the really dark slides. Unfortunately, Kodachrome, with all of its many attributes, does have substantial downsides including a very narrow exposure latitude and shadow detail is simply lacking. I think the scanner accurately reproduced the information including the colors on the Kodachrome slides, with perhaps a slight bluish cast noticed in some cases.
It wasn't until I was finished scanning all of the culled slides that I undertook to scan my select color negatives. And this scanner really came into its own scanning color negatives. Don't even TRY to scan color negatives without ICE because the results are unbelievably bad. Even pristine negatives have scratches and dust that magically are erased by the ICE feature. What a godsend. The scanned color negatives were just beautiful with very accurate color rendition. But immediately I noticed much more grain in the color negatives (Royal Gold and Fuji Superia Gold) than in the scanned slides.
One note unrelated to the scanner itself. Until you've used a digital scanner to scan your color negatives you can't begin to realize how far superior Kodachrome, Provia, and Ektachrome slides are to color negatives insofar as capturing detail. Even the best color negatives have much more grain that Kodachrome. And the difference in color negatives is substantial too.
The included Nikon software worked fantastic for me. I downloaded a copy of VueScan which according to many reviews is superior to the Nikon software and found that for me the Nikon software was easier to work with and produced superior results.
The software did cause my computer to crash occasionally which was an aggravation, but a minor one when considered against its many attributes.
Setup Summary: I scanned at a 8 bit color depth (to reduce file size to 55MB and because I could not see a difference between 8 and 16 bit depth in the old slides) and 4000 pixels per inch with the scan enhancer turned on and the Digital ICE turned on. I did not use GEM ROC and DEE because of inconsistent results. I turned up the gain as necessary for dark slides and turned it down for light slides. Gain adjustments were only necessary on about 15 - 20% of the slides. The only two variables that I used once I was set up and running were gain adjustment and type of film or slide. All other adjustments were made in PS IF necessary. The scan at these settings took 90 seconds. Setting up the Nikon Scan window was a little tricky too. I placed the tool palette in the far upper right corner of the window with the scan window placed under it to the right. The image window occupied the largest portion space to the left.
I can recommend this scanner without reservation. It is a phenomenal piece of equipment.

Epson Perfection 1670 Photo Scanner Review

Epson Perfection 1670 Photo Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In interests of full disclosure, I was only interested in using the scanner to scan family slides, and I returned the scanner after one week.
On the positive side, installation was a breeze in Windows XP. Epson includes a high-speed USB 2.0 cable, which was a nice extra, as most companies skimp here. I was also intrigued by the "touch up old faded photos" software. I have had great experiences with Epson scanners before: in the past I have found Epson scanners to be among the fastest and most accurate, and they have, in the past, included the best OCR software free. I was disappointed that this scanner included ABBYY's OCR software, which is inferior to the OCR software Epson included with last year's scanners. (See CNET's reviews of OCR software.)
After hooking up, I scanned a photo using the included software and automatic settings. The scan went well. I was a little surprised that the automatic settings default to 300 dpi scanning (whether for photos or slides), but higher settings produce images so large in (initially uncompressed) megabytes as to slow down my relatively new Dell computer with 128 meg RAM. Scanning the photo went quickly.
Things did not go as well with the slide scanning. While the software is quite easy to manage, whether in automatic or manual settings, a few annoyances interfere with what could otherwise be quite a successful suite. First off, the scanning software uses overlapping windows for such (simultaneous) windows as the preview window, the scanned pictures window, and the manual settings window, but none of these have separate tabs or "buttons" in the Windows XP taskbar, so it is difficult to move each out of the way to find the other ones. I'm unsure how they even accomplished this, as I've never used a program in XP that didn't produce a button on the taskbar corresponding to an open window. At first this was an annoyance, but after three days, it was crazy infuriating, as it makes it difficult not only to deal with the scanner windows themselves which keep hiding each other, but it also makes very cumbersome to multitask with any other programs. When the scanner is scanning, its software window sometimes will not hide, and then when you do hide it, you can't bring it to the fore again without minimizing the other programs' windows, or it will bring to the fore the wrong window. How Epson can commission an expertly performing software application, but have it without corresponding window-tabs, is typical of today's rush-to-the-market user-unfriendly software. I suppose it doesn't matter when scanning the occasional piece, but it certainly ain't fun when you're scanning the family photo album.
But the final straw was that after hours of scanning various slides at different resolutions, I could not produce a scan that was not SLIGHTLY blurry. Since some of my slides were taken by professional photographers and look crystal clear on the wall, I scuttled my project and returned the scanner. Why spend a week converting the family slides for permanent sharing and archiving, and getting a blurry scan? I have read that this is a common problem with inexpensive scanners: I suspect that if you take the slide out of its white cardboard frame, so it can lay perfectly flat, they might be in focus, but I don't want to ruin my slides. Seems to me that if they can put an autofocus mechanism in extremely cheap cameras, they could have figured out a way to autofocus the slides in this slide-scanning scanner.

Visioneer Mobility Scanner CLR 300DPI Review

Visioneer Mobility Scanner CLR 300DPI
Average Reviews:

I purchased this for scanning black and white documents at a location where setting up my laptop and page scanner was too cumbersome. This does exactly what I need. The paper feeds almost perfect every time. Image quality is very good (300dpi). A full page scans in around 10 seconds. There are only 2 problems I have with this unit. First, the scanner timestamp seems to reset itself so the dates are no where near when I scanned the item and there doesn't seem to be any way of setting the date in any software or the unit itself. Second, when you clear the memory card or USB the filenames revert back to 1 (IMG_0001) This is a pain for me because I scan documents daily and when sorting the files into their various folders, I tend to end up with a lot of duplicate file names. All in all if you need an extremely portable unit to scan in a few single sheets of paper this is for you. If you are looking to scan large quantities of pages then I would suggest getting something with an auto-feed.

Average Reviews:

Pros:
Good quality printing.
Scanner and auto document feeder work well.
Easy to change individual ink cartridges.
Cartridges under $10 each.
Amazing for the price.
Cons:
Very slow printing. If you need to print out a lot of pages quickly, even just plain black text, the slowness of this printer will drive you crazy.
Gobbles up ink.
Won't print anything if one of the ink cartridges is low of ink.
Recommendation:
If you are going to use this as your main printer and you print frequently, consider installing a continuous ink system with external large ink reservoirs.

Canon PIXMA MP450 All-In-One Photo Printer Review

Canon PIXMA MP450 All-In-One Photo Printer

This is not my first Canon, I used them for years and they seem indestructible. I get this MP 450 from Amazon, before it get on the market, and just love it. It is a beautiful little thing, sleek and shiny in black and silver, white a nice adjustable LCD in full colour.
This multifunction is quite small (nice feature if you don't want to clutter your work space) and it does everything his big sister do (I had the huge mp 780 which I was not so found of). The MP 450 works nicely, smoothly and even faster. Scans and copies are sharp and clear, printing is crisp, it's a real pleasure to use.

Often one says it's better to have a cartridge for each colour, I am not so sure: when one is empty, the others follow shortly after. I love having just 2 cartridges to watch and manage (dealing with 4 or 5, you're always running at the shop unless you store a lot). By the way it is really a two (2) cartridges printer (event though I read otherwise on some websites. Furthermore, every time you change one of these, you get a new head, (that means sharp printing). But, even with that, the ink cost is quite low, a very important feature for me as I print a lot of text. It even "duplex print, so you use both side of paper. Furthermore, included are two high capacity cartridges , but I didn't compared theses the regular ones, or found any info on theses, but this is a nice little plus.
Photo and colour printing are astounding, you can modify the setting to your own tastes. The software bundle is full of nice surprises, like Arcsoft photo suite, which reassemble a little to Photoshop but is far much easier to use) , and two scanner utilities.
So I am very glad to have wait for the MP 450. And hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do. Good luck!

HP Deskjet F4280 All-in-One Printer, Scanner, Copier (CB656A) Review

HP Deskjet F4280 All-in-One Printer, Scanner, Copier (CB656A)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought two of these to replace two HP PSC 1610's three wks ago - so far so good. The PSC's worked for us for 3-4 yrs and by now they both sounded too tired and ready to die.
Ink cartridges: Buy the "XL" versions, stands for extra large I guess. Better price per page and less trips to the store.
Installation: A breeze. For the ones who had problems: FOLLOW THE EXACT DIRECTIONS, not what YOU think is the right way :-) BTW, if I thought the installation of the PSC 1610 was long...this one is REALLY long. Was it an hour? Or it seems it was.
The HP F4280 is a lot quieter than the PSC 1610 and reasonably fast. Except at the printing start: For some reason after you hit "Print" it takes 3-5 seconds of "Nothing is Happening". Can this silly problem be corrected?? I ended up with some duplicate documents, but now I know better.
Save ink and time: Set your default at "Fast Draft" - it makes a very respectable copy at that setting.
Scanning: I think it is a little faster than the PSC 1610 and at the default setting of 200dpi the results are very good. I tried the 600dpi, slight difference on the monitor, but I'm sure it makes a better printed copy.
OVERALL: A great printer for the price.

I was given both the Iconvert photo scanner and negative/slide scanner for Christmas a couple of years ago. I first tried to load the software on a 64 bit Vista computer and it would not work. It took me forever to figure out why it would not work, I assumed I was not doing something correctly, however once I figured out that was the problem, I decided that I would use it with my 32 bit computer, however that computer has Windows 7 loaded and again it does not work.
I was able to scan 2 pictures from the photo scanner before I became so frustrated that I gave up and the light source in the scanner washed out the entire picture so it too was of no use.
I have called Brookstone and of course because I took too long in trying different computers etc there is no way I can get a replacement and there are no upgrades available.
If I could give this no stars I would.

Plustek OpticFilm 7400 Film Scanner Review

Plustek OpticFilm 7400 Film Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The unit includes 35mm slide and negative carriers, the power adaptor, USB cable and a case. There's no film strip carrier.
Got it to primarily scan slides, so these comments apply to scanning slides only, and the results so far are very disappointing (using the SilverFast software). There's a decrease in sharpness; images have a slightly out of focus look, with none of the focus "crispness" of the original slide. Colors have a dull and lifeless look, and no amount of adjustment brings them to where they match the original slide. The auto-adjust (in SilverFast and the rest of the bundled software) totally distorts the colors. Reds have the typical overblown digital look, and getting a nice white seems impossible.
The slide and negative carriers have a slight amount of play when they're inserted in the machine; if they're not correctly oriented, the scanned image is slightly askew so a preview scan is a necessity. The scanner is very slow, especially in the multi-scan and multi-exposure modes, and the higher resolution settings. I thought lower resolution scans (below 3200dpi) were marginally acceptable, so dropping the resolution below 3200 to speed up the process wasn't an acceptable option for me. For a simple, "Straight" scan of a slide, the results seem better to me using "quick scan" which doesn't use the SilverFast software.
It occasionally "crashes" giving a message saying the scanner is not ready (apparently this has been an ongoing issue for Plustek OpticFilm scanners for a while now, judging from what I found when researching for a solution); the only thing that fixed the problem was to restart the computer. Regarding the construction: I wonder about the quality of the plastics used; was dusting off the slide carrier with a large soft makeup brush, and found that a small piece of plastic broke off the carrier.
From everything I've read about the SilverFast software, I expected better. The user interface is too busy, with 5 separate windows opening when the program is launched; the programmers sure didn't take into account the end user. Some settings just don't want to work; example, it refuses to take a different output setting for the image size (again, when scanning a alide). There's no confirmation some of the other tools/features are either accepted or being made after clicking on the appropriate button (such as multi-scan, multi-mode, the iSRD dust removal). The other bundled software included is Presto PageManager and Presto ImageFolio. (Today, 11/5/10, I searched Amazon for Silverfast software to see what I might find; sometimes reviewers post some good, helpful info. Found SilverFast SE with 4 reviews and a unanimous 1-star rating....so much for that idea).
Software and drivers installed easily with no problems (on a Windows Vista computer) and the desktop footprint is much smaller than a flatbed scanner; those are the best things I can say about it. This is my first dedicated film scanner; until now I've used flatbed scanners. I once did freelance commercial and advertising photography, did all my own darkroom work, and been an avid photographer since I was in high school, so I have a definite idea of the kinds of results I want, and the 7400 doesn't give me what I hoped for. Maybe once I master the SilverFast software I'll think differently, but in my opinion it shouldn't take that much work to make a straight, accurate scan of an original (slide) that was fine to begin with. Last of all, I think it's overpriced even at the $240 I paid for it (new).
Update 12/3/10: Color calibrated my HP w1907 monitor with a Spyder 3 Express Datacolor DC S3X100 Spyder 3 Express. Slide scan colors still aren't as close as I would like to the originals but are a bit better.

It works well BUT Dell is the pits... they no longer carry this model and it costs more to repair then replace. The next model up has different cartridges so if you have any left when this model goes, tough luck as they can only take a specific kind of cartridge. the quality is good, but unless you like talking to foreigners that speak broken english, you don't get very far with tech support.

Epson Stylus Photo RX595 All-in-One Printer (C11C693201) Review

Epson Stylus Photo RX595 All-in-One Printer (C11C693201)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third printer from this line, and the reason I had to buy it says a lot about what you should expect: the other two up and died after two years for one and nine months for the other.
A quick history: Look for my detailed reviews of the Epson Stylus R200 Photo Printer and the Epson Stylus Photo 260 Inkjet Printer to see some basics about this line. I've owned a couple of other Epson printers prior to buying these for DVD printing -- the ONLY reason to buy one.
Like its predecessors, the RX595 gives very good results on photographs, disappointing results on documents, and exceptional results on discs. The scanner works well, but it's nothing spectacular.
Other than the scanner and ability to handle memory cards, this unit is almost identical to the R260. Because an interface was necessary to print photos from memory cards, there is a little window and a couple of buttons not found on the simpler printers. These are welcome, especially the more sophisticated and less annoying low ink indicator (which tells right in the window which colors are about to run out).
The printer cannot handle SmartMedia, which is a disappointment, but it does have the ability to plug in a generic USB card reader which does serve as a kludgy work-around.
Like the other printers in this line, there are several distinct drawbacks to this model:
1. Ink is expensive and cartridges drain fast. There are new high-capacity cartridges available, but I have found them to last only slightly longer than the standard kind. I haven't measured it, but my gut tells me it's probably not worth the extra money.
2. Ink handling remains crude. For example, you cannot clean the nozzles if even one color is running low. You still cannot print at all if even one color is empty. Colored inks are drained even when you print only in black. Powering on requires a lot of ink. It's better to leave the power on all the time and let it go into sleep mode.
3. The printer is remarkably noisy. It's mostly hollow, and that acts like a big drum, amplifying every little movement inside.
4. Flipping the disc feeder down causes some sort of reset inside the printer which takes 10 seconds or so to clear, during which time you better not try to insert the disc tray or it will get sucked in (and not in a good way)...
5. The software has all of the same quirks of previous models, including seemingly random reset cycles which can run from one to five minutes. This is most annoying. To get the least annoying experience, turn off the print monitor software which is included (and installs automatically). You lose the ability to see ink status, but you also rid yourself of the annoying status window which jumps in front of everything and sits there until the printing is complete.
The only reason I have this is to print on discs. And it does that remarkably well. Unfortunately, the included software is a rather crude tool, and hasn't been upgraded at all for almost three years. This is inexcusable. Still, it works just well enough if you can live with its quirks.
This printer is just OK. Even with all its drawbacks, it's still the best solution around for printing on discs, but for everything else you can do better.
UPDATE 10/20/09
10 months later and this printer is still functioning quite well.
I've discovered one other major drawback which I neglected to mention above. This printer MUST be used regularly (every day is best, at least once a week is the bare minimum) or the nozzles will dry out and be hopelessly clogged. The nozzle cleaning utility will restore partial operation, but it takes quite a few printed pages to get all the nozzles working again.
If you go more than a week between printing (on any type of media), you will be disappointed and frustrated by this printer.

Ectaco C-Pen 3.5 BT Bluetooth Handheld Scanner Review

Ectaco C-Pen 3.5 BT Bluetooth Handheld Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After seeing all the positive and negative reviews for the Ectaco C-pen 20, I decided to take the dive and buy the Bluetooth version of Ectaco's handheld text scanner for my wife. I was apprehensive because there are no reviews for this product, but figured we could return the scanner if it didn't work.
My wife uses the scanner pen to scan text and notes from her law school classes. She stinks at typing, so being able to scan all the text she needs into her class outlines is a *huge* timesaver for her.
Caveats: we are on Vista as our operating system.
Pros:
Easy setup (make sure you follow the directions; DO NOT plug in the scanner prior to loading the software).
Scans accurately and quickly when plugged in via USB; see Cons for the story on Bluetooth mode.
Picks up the following kinds of text without problems: highlighted texts, text in books (make sure the pages are flat, though), or underlined text (provided your underline doesn't go through the text; see Cons)
Picks up kooky symbols, like the ones I found in some of my wife's textbooks (deltas, ampersands, etc.)
Cons:
Doesn't scan text well if you have underlined text and some of your underlining moves up through the printed text.
Doesn't scan very well in Bluetooth-only mode. Essentially, you have about 2-3 seconds to scan your line of text before the light on the scanner goes out and it transmits to your computer. I have no idea what the heck the deal is, but if the Bluetooth part of this scanner is really what you're looking for, I would recommend you *not* buy this product.
Scanner doesn't seem like the most well-constructed thing in the world, *but* it has held up well so far, so that might be a non-issue.
Overall: This text scanner does just fine when it's plugged in to the computer via USB cord. My wife really does save a lot of time in her studies. But, as I mentioned above, the Bluetooth really doesn't function very well at all. I originally gave this product 5 stars because it did exactly what it promised, but I'm changing my rating to (a very generous) 3 stars now that we've found out that the Bluetooth part of the show is so bad. Hopefully Ectaco will fix this in their next system update?

Visioneer 9450 Color Flatbed Scanner with ADF. Review

Visioneer 9450 Color Flatbed Scanner with ADF.
Average Reviews:

Had to download driver to operate on my Vista machine. Also the SCANSOFT PaperPort CD that came with Visioneer 9450 was not compatible with Vista, so had to go to SCANSOFT site to download upgrade. Also had to call Visioneer technical support regarding the connections, since the instructions weren't 100% clear. After finally loading the right Vista driver and software, and making the correct connections, the Visioneer scanner has worked well.

Brother MFC- J410w Review

I purchased this all in one a few days back. The wireless was incredibly easy to set up. The features, such as, scanning to a file or an e-mail is great! The amount of ink that it uses is fantastic. You get about 500 pages per cartridge. So far, over all, I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to others.
