Plustek OpticFilm 7600I SE Film Scanner Review

Plustek OpticFilm 7600I SE Film Scanner
Average Reviews:

I was scanning my family's old slides and needed something that would fix the faded ones.
I also wanted enough resolution to capture the sharpness and contrast of Kodachrome. The inexpensive scanner I had was making images taken with a Leica look like snapshots from a Brownie.
The scan results from the Plustek are at times unbelievable. The resolution is very high. But it is the software that really makes this scanner special. Over-exposed, under-exposed and images that have faded with time, such as Ektachrome, Anscochrome or non-Kodak processing, can be reasonably restored. The program is intuitive and the learning curve was short and easy for me. I do have some experience with photo editing software.
As with all photo editing, it does take 3 to 10 minutes to properly restore a bad slide. I was impressed with its ability to remove spots and scratches. This scanner was worth every penny I paid for it. The major down side is having to take the slides out of Carousel trays and insert them into the holder 4 at a time, and wait for each to scan. It needs a "Stack Loader" and automated slide scanning.

Plustek ST64+ Film Negative and Photo Scanner - 48 bit Color - 16 bit Grayscale - 3200 dpi - USB Review

Plustek ST64+ Film Negative and Photo Scanner - 48 bit Color - 16 bit Grayscale - 3200 dpi - USB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this scanner for two reasons, both regarding scanning transparencies.
First, not only can it scan 35mm slides and film it comes with a transparency adapter that holds 110/120 film as well. (As well as another adapter to hold 4x6" or 5x7" transparencies. I need to scan a lot of 35mm, but there's a huge pile of 120 negatives in my family photo albums. And a dedicated 35mm only scanner just wouldn't fit the bill.
I knew a flat bed scanner that also works with transparencies would be a compromise at best, but...
Where the Plustek 64+ really loses points - as a film scanner - is from the bundled software that comes with it. Other film scanners from Plustek come bundled with some version of SilverFast to process transparency scanning and provide scratch & dust fixes, color correction for old slides etc. This scanner DOES NOT come with SilverFast software or anything remotely close to it.
Plustek provides a very "rude and crude" TWAIN scanner interface. For example, the 35mm transparency adapter can hold up to six slides at a time. The TWAIN software does not come with any pre-defined template to scan those slides into your image editing software as six separate images. Nor does the TWAIN driver auto detect separate images and automatically mask those images as separate selections. (The limited software documentation seems to imply that the software should do this, but it doesn't.) Can you batch scan six slides transfer them as separate files into the editing software of your choice? You can, but you have to manually create a mask in the TWAIN software for each slide in the transparency adapter. And have all the masks end up as a slightly different size - there is no option to "drag and copy" a mask in the TWAIN interface either. I've seen those features provided in scanners that worked in Windows 3.11 Why on earth are they missing here?
But the worst part about the TWAIN software and the enclosed "suite" of various image editing, OCR & cataloging software is the lack of any real transparency support tools. No dust removal, scratch fix, multi-scan, pre-set transparency color corrections... nothing. Well, nothing beyond very basic image editing tools that you would find in any simple photo editing program. Look at what's available in the SilverFast program - none of that is provided with this scanner. The cheapest retail version of SilverFast that works with this scanner will set you back close to 80 bucks.
In theory, one of the programs provided "Presto! ImageFolio 4" can work with Adobe Photoshop plug-ins. But all the documentation says about this feature is to "enter the directory name where the Photoshop plug-ins reside." Which version of Photoshop plug-ins...? Documentation doesn't say.
This might be a good scanner. And it is for plain old paper documents. But is it a good scanner for transparencies? You will never know if you try to use it with the provided software. Only buy it if for transparencies if you already have good software at hand or plan on shelling out money for it. Otherwise you will only get mediocre transparency results, at best. Very disappointed with the software and the results.
What's the point in putting a film & slide scanner on the market if the software provided does such a lousy job with film & slides?

Epson Perfection 4870 PRO Scanner Review

Epson Perfection 4870 PRO Scanner

I shoot black & white 35 mm. Previously relied upon either a Polaroid SprintScan 4000 or drum scans. The 4870 produces gorgeous scans and is easy to use. I'm very happy with my purchase. SilverFast has proved to be a dissapointment for use with B&W negs. I would probably have purchased the regular 4870 vs. Pro version if I had it to do over again.

Epson Perfection 2400 Photo Scanner Review

Epson Perfection 2400 Photo Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used scanners for ten years and I am here to tell you that the Epson 2400 Photo laps the competition and leaves them in the dust.
The setup of this solidly constructed scanner onto my Windows 2000 went without a hitch. Most problems associated with scanner setups trace back to a failure to read and follow instructions, so I used care to read through everything before beginning!
With that completed, I followed instructions in the automated Epson TWAIN 5 and quickly got a perfect photo scan 300 DPI. The buttons on the front worked well, sending respective scans to printer, e-mail and web. I kept grabbing for the mouse, expecting to be called to do something, but everything was automated. I placed 6 photos on the glass, leaving room between them, and the TWAIN identified and segregated each into its own file perfectly.
I got this scanner to handle my collection of slides, so that was a very important feature for me. Removal of the laminated lid-liner exposes the TPU light. The liner pops in and out nicely. The beautifully designed slide/negative holder lies on the glass, indexing precisely. This combination of engineering elegance illustrates a sufficiency few engineers seem to grasp. "Keep it simple, stupid". It holds 4 slides or a strip of up to 6 negatives. I was absolutely impressed with the design and efficiency thus far! The slides simply drop within their frame onto the glass and are retrieved effortlessly. With another very slick demonstration of engineering wizardry, negative filmstrips slide smoothly and effortlessly into the other side of the frame, and are positioned precisely and uniformly above the glass with no bends.
It seemed too easy, but in only 42 seconds, the scanner automatically recognized the color positives, lit the TPU lamp, pre-scanned all four slides, and left thumbnails before me to select from. What an encouraging start!
NOTE: One reviewer is ENTIRELY mistaken when he incorrectly stated that all four slides must be scanned. Quite to the contrary, a check box adjacent to each thumbnail permits any of them to be unselected. What he thought those check marks meant can only be imagined and testifies that some people are best left in a locked room with no sharp objects for their own safety.
Operating with only USB-1 on my machine, the 2400 Photo scanned each slide in 54 seconds, which I considered to be quite acceptable. Not only were the results stunning, they appeared perfect, with no hotspots, off colors, or degradation of sharpness. It delivered absolutely perfect reproduction, with precise cropping, too.
However, I wanted greater resolution than the default 300 DPI. While 300 DPI is fine for printing slides, I desire to archive slides for viewing on the giant-size screens of the future and wanted to take advantage of the 2400 DPI capability of the unit.
Access is easily gained to the inner sanctum of Epson TWAIN 5 by clicking a button during the 15-second warm-up phase. Within is an almost unlimited array of options. 2400 DPI from a slide generated a large 17.1 meg file to deal with, which can either be saved in it's bulky Windows Bitmap version, or as a more manageable 1.1 meg JPEG file, no loss of image data.
Expecting a more time-consuming project, I instead found that speed was mysteriously unaffected. In fact, because pre-scanning of subsequent items can be bypassed in manual mode, four slides were completed at 2400 magnificent DPI from a cold start in exactly 3:50 minutes; a full 70 seconds faster than the same number in auto mode. Adopting a rhythm, I scanned 63 slides in one hour, which I thought to be a fabulous rate. Any number of slides can be scanned before you close the TWAIN and "finish" them, at which time you can rename if you desire, de-select unwanted photos, select the final format and determine the target directory of choice. Having said that, I would recommend investing your time wisely and save them periodically, should a crash or other Windows frustration occur, causing all your dedicated effort to vanish. About 40 slides is my emotional limit.
Filmstrip negative performance was absolutely beautiful, "exposing" the film with absolute perfection most processing labs can never achieve. The backlighting of the TPU device provides a depth and realism normally associated with transparencies, while the 2400 DPI resolution puts almost any digital camera to shame.
The supplied Adobe Photo Essentials does provide the very good essential features of its big brother Adobe Photo Shop for correcting and retouching photos. Having said that and having all three on my machine, I prefer to use JASC Paint Shop Pro. At one-sixth the cost of Photo Shop, I find PSP is slicker, with all the features of the former, with some features that Photo Shop doesn't have, like a magnification tool that zooms in and out with left and right clicks, without having to change modes.
I put the Essentials to work on a set of 140 slides of professional Ektachrome from a 1987 Norway tour, to see if I could get the same results with equal efficiency. This slide film tends to require about one f-stop longer exposure I didn't know about at the time, which left me with an entire collection of darkened photos that all needed some digital magic.
Essentials performed fine, and pulled up more light from scenes while balancing the contrast, to reveal detail and richness I had never seen before. None of my slides suffered from scratches of dust, so I had no occasion to check out this provision. After going through half the slides, I grabbed for the Paint Shop Pro again. With a less-cluttered desktop and the highly usable combined brightness/contrast tool, my wife and I took turns speeding through the remainder. PSP isn't better, it just goes easier and quicker.
I have never written a review of any product before, but felt Epson's huge success deserved credit. The Epson Perfection 2400 Photo and TWAIN software are a combination that gives remarkable and satisfying results.

Canon MP480 All-in-One Photo Printer Review

Canon MP480 All-in-One Photo Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a HUGE fan of Canon printers for many years. In fact I have only bought Canon for my own computers, having listened to complaints and problems about every other brand from all of my friends.
The price alone on this MP480 (I paid $49.50 for it, with a $20 mail in rebate-making the total cost less than $30!!!!) makes it an incredible value, but it is also the best one yet for printing speed, quality and functionality. I LOVE the fact that it will print, copy AND scan all in one very compact machine! Goodbye stand-alone HP scanner, I never cared much for you anyway. And the fact that you can print photos from your camera and make copies without the computer even being turned on, is just awesome. Not only does it support pictbridge (plugging your camera into the printer) but it also has slots for your memory cards and a pop-up screen with a very functional menu to take care of almost any printing need, sans computer!
It was a snap to set up, installed without a single glitch and, unlike the other reviewer who had difficulty with what they perceived as an antiquated, unhelpful print-head alignment program, I also found that process to be simple, fast and easy. PLEASE NOTE: If this is your first USB printer, you will need to purchase a USB cable because it doesn't come with one.
So, why not 5 stars? I do have two complaints:
1. The best thing to come along with printers in the last 15 years was Canon's innovative use of separate cartridges for each color. They last 10 times longer and save money by ONLY having to replace the single color that is out. There is only one possible reason why Canon has decided to stray from that smart technology - MONEY. Less ink in a more expensive cartridge means more money in Canon's pockets. Still, these cartridges are cheaper than comparable ones for Epson or Lexmark printers and I have NOT found that the ink 'disappears' any faster than other brands with a similar quantity of ink (buy the 'XL' replacement cartridges for a better value)
2. I loved the auto-shut off feature of my ip2000. I never had to turn it off or power it back up. When I needed to print, I simply hit the 'print' key and it did it's thing. The MP480 either needs to stay on all the time (the menu screen does turn itself off after 5 minutes of non-use) or you have to turn it on and let it go through it's lengthy routine every time you want to use it.
That said, the 'quiet' mode is quiet, the print quality is superb and the footprint on my desk isn't much more than my ip2000 and the multifunction MP480 allowed me to get rid of my bulky scanner, so even with it's two drawbacks, this one is a definite keeper!

Canon PIXMA iP2702 Inkjet Photo Printer (4103B002) with PP-201 Photo Paper Review

Canon PIXMA iP2702 Inkjet Photo Printer (4103B002) with PP-201 Photo Paper
Average Reviews:

The main attraction of this entry level printer is its small footprint. It's not as small (or costly) as a portable printer, but it doesn't take as much desk space as most other photo inkjet printers. It doesn't even have a paper tray to hold prints.
The photo quality is decent, but sometimes produces flat looking images like my portable PIXMA iP90v. You can't expect more from three-color plus black inkjet printers. It runs a tad noisy and, in my experience thus far, uses up colored ink too quickly. The print speed is satisfactory. Black and white text prints out nice as do non-continuous tone graphics.
If you're looking for a low-cost, frills-free photo printer that doesn't take too much space, the 2702 is a good choice. If you do buy it, make sure to get the extra large capacity ink cartridges when you need to order them.
btw, I've owned a number of Canon printers and am a big fan of them. If photo quality is your top priority, get a printer with more ink colors. They'll have more features too.

Print File's negative page is essential if you have negatives that you would like to save and store. Instead of keeping them in the degradable plastic that came with your developed prints, take out the old shoebox that they live in, and put them in these archival pages.
This has made my life easier and my files so much more organized! With a space at the top for writing subject content and date, this is a saving grace for those of us who have negatives that we would like to hold onto.
It is getting harder to find these in camera stores and photo stops, but I am thrilled that Print File has such good customer service and a good product.

Canon BCI-6PM Photo Magenta Ink Tank Review

Canon BCI-6PM Photo Magenta Ink Tank
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although lower cost substitute ink cartridges are sold all over the web, and on this site as well, the few bucks you might save aren't worth the all-too genuine risks of replacing with generic "no-name" ink tanks. I've heard (but wouldn't wish to try it, frankly) that generic inks fade faster when exposed to daylight, could clog the print-head spray nozzles, don't spread properly on top-quality paper, and simply can't compare with the uniquely formulated dyes that have been specially researched for your printer and its matching photo papers. The one exception might be if you use a black-ink-only inkjet [hard to imagine anyone could screw up black ink]. I concur that printer manufacturers use that old hoary "razor trick" (give away the razor, profit on the blades), but with Canon's individual ink tanks -- where you replace only those tanks that run dry, you aren't out a lot. My Canon photo printer uses an array of six ink tank colors. Of these six tanks (all available on this site), 'photo cyan' and 'photo magenta' seem to be used up 2 to 3 times faster than 'black'. In other words, rather than replacing an entire set of six ink tanks, you can replace just those tanks that run empty the soonest -- thus not having to toss out a 3-ink tank [as used by HP] where 2 of the 3 remaining inks still are far from used up. Just a word of caution here - make certain that every cartridge you order from Amazon clearly states its eligibility for SuperSaver shipping. If you have to add shipping charges to this low-cost item, you could end up paying more than you would have at the local office supply store.

NeatDesk Desktop Scanner and Digital Filing System Review

NeatDesk Desktop Scanner and Digital Filing System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased a NeatDesk scanner awhile ago to answer a growing need at home for more robust scanning. I'm one of those people that needs to have everything neatly filed away even though I will probably never see it again. I also religiously enter all my personal receipts and track my personal finances in detail. This seemed the perfect product to answer both needs.
I was used to the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 that I have at work, but in addition to an arm they also wanted a leg. The price of the NeatDesk is substantially less (about 40% for what I paid), and the promotional material for the scanning software was really sexy. So I clicked buy.
After a few days, my conclusion is that although it could be an outstanding product with a couple of tweaks, it's just not ready for primetime. This may be the case of a small company working on tight margins with a product that got too big too fast. It remains to be seen whether or not they can keep up with their new-found popularity.
Here's the dirt:
Hardware:
Good Stuff
- Attractive design.
- You can click the hardware "Scan" button all day, but you don't have to file your scans until you want to.
Bad Stuff
- No adjustable paper guide. Unless you hold it as it's sucked in, every single document is crooked.
- Not enough paper support. Creased documents (like a bill) flop back and aren't grabbed properly.
- I found the slot for receipts and documents to not match any receipt or document I had... Nice slot for business cards though.
- The output tray is not attached to the scanner body. Huh?
- It came with the grim spectre of having to clean and calibrate your scanner. You don't have to clean or calibrate the ScanSnap, although the ScanSnap does include "consumables", so maybe it's a tie.
Software:
Good Stuff
- Recognizes dates, subtotal, sales tax, and credit card used. This alone almost makes the product an overall winner and definitely put it on top for scanning receipts.
- As mentioned above, you don't have to file away your scans until you want to.
- Extremely fast search.
- It's pretty--yeah, that's important.
Bad Stuff
- Always takes the scan from the front but from the sheet in the back, which may be more intuitive for the beginner, but also means that a stack of double-sided sheets will go into the software backwards (page 2, 1, 4, 3, etc.) so you'll have to sort your document before and after scanning. Maybe I just haven't figured this one out, but it does seem like they emphasis multiple single-page documents vs. one multiple-page document.
* UPDATE: I figured out that you have to put the document in face up and everything is scanned in from the last page to the front. Your physical document will come out sorted, and the software will reverse the order of the scanned pages for you so the electronic document is correct.
- Does not auto-rotate to fix crooked problem caused by not having adjustable paper guides.
- Does not do auto-color detection--it's either all black-and-white or all color and you must choose. Those "Scan" and "PDF" buttons on the front are great, but you have to go into the Quick Scan application to set up how everything will be scanned first, defeating the convenience.
- Viewing the documents that are in the library is difficult. Should have a simple hand-tool for dragging and allow multiple documents to be open at one time.
- Moving data around the library is laborious.
- Software installs SQL Server Express, which takes up system resources and at least for me causes the program to not want to start up (try again message a couple of times before starting). Sure the search results come back very quickly, but at what cost? As a developer, I actually already had SQL Server Express installed, but it went ahead and installed another instance... Not very nice.
- Lots of opportunities to categorize data, but searching for the categories is difficult. For example, to see what you marked for follow up click "Advanced Search", click "Looking at..." and select "Action Type", click "Selected in the List", click and check box that says "Follow Up". It's more work finding out what's marked "follow up" than to actually follow up.
- The heavy emphasis is on recording receipts for expenses that will be reimbursed by your employer or be tax deductible. So what happens when I have a pay stub for consulting work? I have to file it as a document where I can't tag it's dollar amount, can't tag it as 1099 income, and it can't be exported to Quicken. That's one of the main reasons I got the scanner.
- Categories for receipts are very limited. Need a split? You'll have to do it yourself when you get to Quicken if you can remember what the receipt was for. Sales tax is always exported as an over-generalized "State Tax".
How it Could (Easily) be Made Great
- Package in or sell another paper guide that is adjustable. You can use the same snap-in style that is used for the receipt/business card guide.
- Add one inch to the pull-out paper support.
- Update the software to take scans from the face down position first on double-sided scans. Take the scan from the face down position only in single-sided scans.
* UPDATE: Even though this way seems more intuitive to me, the way the software does it is okay (see update above).
- Add in auto-color detection and auto-rotate so that scans always come out right. If Neat Co can do awesome text-detection, they could do this.
Conclusion
Seems to be an innovative company so I'll keep it in anticipation of at least the software updates.

Having used scanners from Canon, Xerox, Lanier, Visioneer and Epson, I have a good base from which to compare this scanner. It is excellent! The feed mechanism on this scanner is superior to all prior scanners I have used, including other scanners in this price range. This unit has multiple rollers located in the base and cover that spin at different speeds to pull only one sheet at a time. In other scanners, folded paper - like documents received in an envelop - will double/multi feed. I have not had a single double feed with this unit. I am using it with File Center Pro software to convert more than 1,600 legal files to paperless .pdf format. I was so impressed with this unit that I now have 4 of them in the office, each going at least 8 hours per day with virtually no jams or double feeds. It's worth the money for an office setting where you don't have time for jams and double feeds.

Standard $20.43-- $2.27 per ML
XL $26.99 -- $2.08 per ML
So, yes... the larger capacity XL cartridge is a better buy.

HP Officejet 6500A e-All-in-One (CN555A#B1H) Review

HP Officejet 6500A e-All-in-One (CN555A#B1H)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used only Hewlett-Packard printers since I bought my computer a decade ago, in 2001. My choice was simple, as these printers earn high ratings year after year. I print out a lot of photography for both family photos and magazine photos, and also regular printing. I also write and print an abundance of family history pages and articles for a collectibles magazine. I use my printers heavy duty and I am on my second printer since 2001. My HP printers have a life span of around 5 years, which is unheard of, as the average printers lifespan is around 2 years. My printers have always been the HP Ink Jet Photosmart models as they give me the best quality photographs, both color and black and white, on my favorite HP soft gloss paper. Laser ink doesn't come close in comparison to the rich saturated colors of Inkjet ink. Photographs, Art and Pictures come to life with an Inkjet printer. The only thing the average person should know is that inkjet ink runs if it gets wet, so for shipping labels always cover them in clear tape. For more permanently protected photos, go to an arts/crafts store and buy a can of photo protectant spray. The extra covering gives you a lifetime of protected treasures.

This is the first time I have tried a non-photo printer, using this HP Officejet 6500A All In One model. If you are wondering what the difference is between a photo printer and an office printer- it's the colors. With my Photosmart, I have 2 extra light ink colors- cyan (blue) and magenta (pink) shades. These 2 extra ink shades give you a full array of even the slightest color variations. Working in art and photography, I noticed a slight color difference in certain shades. For a professional artist making photographs or great color prints, this is not the printer for you. For the average office or home use, non-professional photo prints or just needing a regular printer, this printer is superb.

This HP Officejet 6500A All In One machine includes 4 devices- a printer, copier, scanner and fax machine. What you get for the money is one great machine. This machine has earned the Energy Star, which means it will save you money, since it met the Energy Star program's test method criteria. Energy Star's savings rating on this machine, states you will use 40% less energy than on any comparable laser machine. I look for Energy Star's ratings whenever I buy any appliance, as saving energy means saving both fuel and money. Another big money saver is buying the HP inks in the XL sizes. I've been doing this since HP came out with these extra large ink sizes with my HP Photosmart, and it is a huge money saver.

I've been using this machine every day for a while and I will rate each of it's 4 devices separately so the consumer can see if this fits his/her needs. To begin with, this machine works with the supporting operating systems of Microsoft Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP (with SP2) ,Mac OSX v 10.5, 10.6 and Linox. The machine itself measures 18.75 inches x 16.11 inches x 10.13 inches. It weighs almost 18 pounds. Inside the box is your 4 in one Officejet machine, the power cord, phone cord, booklet and cd software and all 4 ink jet cartridges- black, yellow, cyan and magenta. Not included is the USB cable. Installation took mere minutes with the cd software on my Windows XP. As with all their printers, HP includes a limited 1 year warranty. Now I will rate the 4 devices.

PRINTER- 5 Stars- You can print anywhere with this machine using your computer, mobile phone, laptop or mobile device. The tray supported paper sizes are letter, legal, statement, executive, 3 x 5, 4 x 6, 5 x 7, 5 x 8, 4 x 10, 4 x 11, 4 x 12, 8 x 10, envelopes no. 10, monarch and envelopes DL. The input tray takes up to 250 sheets with a duty cycle of up to 7000 pages. Maximum printing speeds are up to 32 pages per minute with black ink and up to 31 for color- speeds equivalent to laser printers. This does not have duplex printing features (2 sided). It does have borderless printing options. You can use your memory cards for direct photo printing. You can by-pass your PC by inserting a memory card in one of the slots and use the 2.36 inch touch screen to print. The memory cards supported are secure digital- also high capacity, multimedia and secure multimedia card, reduced size multimedia card, mmc mobile and mmc micro mini (adapter not included), memory stick and memory stick duo and pro. The 4 inks used are the HP 920 cartridges and you can definitely save when you buy the XL sizes. With the regular HP 920 Black ink cartridge, you get approximately 420 pages. With an XL black ink cartridge you get up to 1200 pages. With all the XL color cartridges of yellow, cyan and magenta, you can get up to 700 pages. The cartridges are recyclable. This is not a wireless machine. When printing in color from your computer, using a good brand of paper, you will get the best resolution of up to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi. You can get up to 600 from black ink. The printer, although not as good as my Photosmart when it comes to endless color variation, is extremely superb in printing both pages and photos.

COPIER- 4 1/2 Stars- You can copy in color up to 31 cpm and in black up to 32 cpm. The maximum number of copies is up to 100. The copy scaling is from 25 to 100%. The copier is quite good and rates above average.

SCANNER- 4 1/2 Stars- I am quite spoiled with always owning an Epson Perfection Photo Scanner for the last 10 years. So I am comparing a truly perfect scanner with this HP one that is included in this All In One machine. This Scanner type is a Flatbed 8.5 x 11.7 and also an ADF 8.5 x 14. These are good maximum document sizes for general use and office use scanning. It does have real life technologies with a 48 bit scanner depth. The scanner resolution for optical is up to 4800 dpi. This scans above average, but not quite as sharp as my Epson Perfection scanner. I notice tiny minute details from spending decades fixing old photos from the late 1800's, so the average person might call this scanner excellent, where I consider this above average as I am used to much more pixel detail I get from my Epson Perfection.

FAX MACHINE- 5 STARS- This Fax Machine has a transmission speed of 3 seconds per page. The Fax resolution is up to 300 x 300 dpi. The incoming fax memory is up to 100 pages, with fax speed dials up to 100 numbers. You can fax fast at up to 33.6 kpbs. The connectivity is a standard built in ethernet with a USB 2.0. There is no wireless capability. You can quickly fax or scan to a PC or Email. With this built in ethernet, you can stay connected and share resources. The speed and smoothness on this efficient fax machine give it a high 5 star rating with me.

Overall, this HP Officejet 6500A All In One gets a 4.75 STAR rating from me, with it's usual great printer, super fast fax, and better than average copier and scanner. Many of my friends have some of the latest All In One Machines that I have heard complaints about, from the bugs and how non smoothly they run. This machine is unbelievably smooth and fast and when more people use and review it, it will definitely rank high on the Hewlett Packard website. It is actually better than some of their other models I've heard about, and may prove to be their best model to date. Add to this Hewlett Packard's great support and web site that helps you with any problems, downloads, drivers and manuals, and you have a great 4 in one printer, copier, scanner and fax machine for the money.

HP ScanJet 5590 Digital FlatBed Scanner Review

HP ScanJet 5590 Digital FlatBed Scanner
Average Reviews:

I have been looking for a reasonably priced duplex ADF scanner for some time now, I want to scan a file cabinet of documents and shred the originals. I thought this HP was it, it isn't. I spent several hours over a few days giving this guy a workout. I scanned stacks of bank statements (30-35 pages at a time) (8.5 x 11) and mortgage documents (8.5 x 14) both single sided and double sided. Several times the ADF jammed (roller slipped and eventually gave up) and I had to man handle the stuck page out, I could find no way to release its grasp of the paper. These were not glossy pages, just typical bank statements. Other times one or two pages of a stack of 35 would scan in only a third of the page. It cannot scan duplex pages longer then 12 inches, I don't know why. Duplex scanning takes more then twice as long as simplex because it has only a single scanner and must flip the page (I think it does this flipping twice). The software wasn't smart enough to handle scanning mix length pages, if I had a document (for example: mortgage papers) with a mix of letter and legal size pages I had to tell the software that all the pages were 14 inches long otherwise it truncated the legal size to 11 inches. It all boils down to a lack of trust for me. Before I go shredding originals of these documents I need to be able to trust that I have good electronic copies and this scanner/software didn't establish that trust.

Imagelab FS9T 9 MP Slide and Negative Scanner with 2.4-Inch Tft LCD Screen Review

Imagelab FS9T 9 MP Slide and Negative Scanner with 2.4-Inch Tft LCD Screen

Wow, I am totally impressed with this product. Not only was it simple to setup and use but it integrated to my MAC without a flaw. The quality of the images are amazing (providing that the slides are good). I have scanned photos in the past but find digitally converting the slides to be much better quality. NOTE: remember to blow off the dust on the slides before you scan them. The system comes with 2 trays each for slides or negatives. Although that may not seem like a lot (3 slides per tray) it proved to be fine. I also used the SD memory card from my camera so I didn't have to buy another one. I do recommend using a memory card for without it the system can only store about 10 pictures. With the memory card I was able to use the machine and the 1000 slides I have and quickly convert them while I was watching a movie. Later I went back to my desk and connected the scanner to my MAC and downloaded. Easy! If you have old slides I highly recommend doing this. Not only will you get a good laugh at old memories but for me I will be putting together a DVD to give as gifts. I am sure the rest of my family will get a kick out of the old pictures as well.
